Chapter 17

With a lack of sleep, Caroline dragged her feet the next day. Anxiety lingered in her, and her heart seemed as if it was trying to come out of her body, while her mind raced.

“Can we stop for a minute?” she asked Merlin after they had walked for an hour.

“Not for long,” he said.

She took off to get away from the boys and to clear her mind. She sat by a little waterfall she found. Today, their plans were to get out of the forest and start going through the village. It also was going to be their longest day of walking, but the day had already taken a toll on her.

Caroline closed her eyes, listening to the water. But her mind went back to Achilles. If he was alive, and her dream was a warning, what had they done wrong the year before? How was he still alive?

“Are you all right?” Sal asked as he sat next to her. The little dragon sat on his shoulder, looking equally worried.

“No,” she said as she watched a black leaf float down the stream. “I had a dream last night with Achilles. H-he said he would kill me. Sal, it was so real! I think it was a warning.”

He took her hand in his. “It was just a dream, right? It’s not true. You’ve said it yourself many times: Achilles is dead.”

“But it felt so real. Sal, I am scared,” she said, holding back a sob. “He made my life hell, and I can’t do it again!”

“I know.” He smiled weakly before kissing her forehead. “I hate seeing you unhappy about something that is out of my hands.”

She blinked away her tears and stood, not wanting to waste more time. They still had a long way to go. “Let’s get going.”

“You’re going to be all right,” he said, taking her hand again and giving it a caring squeeze.

Merlin walked up to the pair, seeming in a fairly good mood despite the unplanned stop. “Is everything all right?” he asked, looking at them both.

“Yes,” she said, giving him her best smile and hoping he wouldn’t ask her anything more.

“Well, I believe we should get moving.” He pointed toward the gray clouds that were visible through the treetops. “Looks like a storm is coming.” He turned back and started walking.

“You should tell him,” Sal whispered.

“No, not yet,” she answered, not wanting to worry Merlin. She looked to her right, spotting something shining in the sunlight. “Is that…?” She moved forward to get a better look. “The mirror!”

Sal stopped in his tracks. “You mean to tell me that we’re not even past the mirror?!”

“Yes. Did you think I would live close to where the guards roam?” Merlin asked.

No one answered. Caroline stared at the mirror with her mouth open in disbelief. Everything felt so much farther knowing that they were back where they had started.

“Let us go to the village,” Merlin said, laughing as he started walking again.

Sal looked at the mirror one last time before grabbing her arm for her to follow.
